Chocolate Cream Killer | Murder in Brighton
Look Into Brighton's Chocolate Cream Killer by Mandeep Rai
Yes, the CHOCOLATE CREAM killer. I thought the same thing... It's not quite how it sounds.
This murder took place in the 1860s in Brighton, UK (off topic, but why do so many murders seem to be happening in seaside towns?? We learned about the Herne Bay, Kent bathtub murders earlier, and now we have a killer in sunny Brighton!)
So who was the chocolate cream killer, and how did she get that name?
Christiana Edmunds was a woman scorned, or so she believed! In the 1860s, she became quite the jealous "lover", and thus began her poisoning spree. I use the term "lover" loosely as she was never actually dating the man in question. Nevertheless, Edmunds was madly in love with the man, who was a local doctor, and she believed the only way to be with him would be to simply poison, and therefore get rid of, his wife.
The wife, being married to a doctor, was of course seen to straight away. He examined her sudden illness and believed she could of been poisoned. His wife would recover from this, and neither of them reported the possible crime to the police.
So what do you do when your poisoning plan fails? Well Edmunds was furious, and decided to go one step further. Instead of giving the chocolates to the doctor's wife, she decided to purchase chocolate from a local shop, lace them with poison, and return them to the shop. Sadly this meant whoever bought the now poisoned chocolate may suffer the fate Edmunds' had intended for the doctor's wife. The unfortunate victim was later identified as a young boy named Sidney Barker. Barker and his family had been visiting Brighton for a family holiday when they bought the chocolate.
Following Barker's sudden death, the doctor decided to come forward and reveal his suspicions to the police, and led them straight to Edmunds. Edmunds, however, had mailed herself some poisoned chocolate in an attempt to become the victim of the mysterious chocolate cream killer. Her plan back fired and she was arrested.
Case solved.
